Select Your Ingredients
For saffron, use 8–12 threads per preparation. You may also combine with a pinch of sugar or salt to help create a finer powder. -
Begin Grinding
Place the saffron (or other spice) in the center of the mortar. Using the pestle, press down gently in a circular motion. For saffron, a slow rhythm coaxes out its color and fragrance without damaging the threads’ natural oils. -
Achieve Desired Texture
Continue grinding until the texture is fine and even. For saffron, you should see a soft, crimson powder ready for steeping or infusion. -
Transfer & Clean
Use a dry brush or soft cloth to transfer the ground saffron into a dish or steamer. Clean the mortar and pestle with a damp cloth—avoid soaking in water to preserve the wood’s longevity. Allow to air dry completely before storing.
